PNP-xylobioside
4-Nitrophenyl b-D-xylobioside
4-Nitrophenyl b-D-xylobioside is a potential biofuel that can be used as a substrate for cellulase production. This substrate has been shown to have activity against thermophilic and mesophilic bacteria, including Clostridium thermocellum and Clostridium cellulolyticum. 4-Nitrophenyl b-D-xylobioside is also a bifunctional substrate, which means it can function as both a substrate for cellulase production and an inhibitor of the enzyme phosphatase. The inhibition of phosphatase by 4-nitrophenyl b-D-xylobioside leads to increased levels of p-nitrophenol phosphate, which inhibits the growth of bacteria.
