4-Mu-Propionate; Propionic acid-4-methylumbelliferyl ester

4-Methylumbelliferyl propionate

4-Methylumbelliferyl propionate is a fluorescent fatty acid analogue that can be used to assess the activity of lipolytic enzymes. This compound is a disulfide bond, which means that it contains two cysteine residues with one sulfur atom between them. 4-Methylumbelliferyl propionate has different codominant properties depending on the strain of fungus being tested. It can be used in biochemical studies to determine the accesses and termini of cell membranes. The methyl group at position 4 confers high reactivity and lipolytic properties on this compound. It also has been shown to have biochemically unique properties such as hydrogen bonding, which may reflect its ability for binding to lipid molecules.
