It is an important constituent of cellular metabolism. 3-O-Methyl-D-Glucose is transported into cells by glucose transporters and phosphorylated to form glucose 6-phosphate, which can be used for glycolysis or gluconeogenesis. 3-O-Methyl-D-Glucose is also involved in the regulation of the immune system, such as the activation of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes through the Toll receptor pathway and its binding to response elements on DNA for transcriptional regulation. 3-O-Methylglucose has been shown to inhibit murine sarcoma virus replication in vitro and can be used as an antimicrobial agent against bacterial cells.
