5-Bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl caprylate is an enzyme inhibitor that inhibits lipolytic enzymes. It has been found in a number of microorganisms such as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Chlorobium tepidum. 5-Bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl caprylate has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the lipase from Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, which is an opportunistic pathogen that causes infectious diseases. The hydroxy group on the compound provides a site for binding to the active site of the enzyme, leading to inhibition and subsequent elimination of the substrate. 5-Bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl caprylate also contains a chiral center at C5, making it an analytical tool for determining stereochemistry.
