2-naphthyl butyrate is a butyrate ester obtained by formal condensation of the carboxy group of butyric acid with the hydroxy group of 2-naphthol. It has a role as a chromogenic compound. It is a member of naphthalenes, a butyrate ester and an aromatic ester. It derives from a 2-naphthol.
2-Naphthyl butyrate is an acidic chemical compound that belongs to the genus 2-naphthyl. It is a fatty acid that is soluble in both water and organic solvents. The physiological effects of 2-naphthyl butyrate are not well understood, although it has been shown to have biochemical properties including phosphatase and enzyme activities. This compound has been shown to be active against oral pathogens such as Streptococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. 2-Naphthyl butyrate has also been shown to inhibit growth of bacteria by intramolecular hydrogen formation, which leads to bacterial cell death by oxidative damage.
